Game Preview takes a look at what we can expect in Season 2 of the addictive survival and exploration game. In Season 1, the story focused on six people who were stranded deep inside an erupting volcano. Season 2 picks up right after the conclusion of the first season, as a new group of survivors has to find a way back to Earth and start life anew.

Fractured Lands Game Review

If you enjoyed the first season, you’ll love this one. It feels almost too full of a plotline to follow, but that just makes it all the more fun. We get to see some familiar faces from the first game returning, such as Dr. Azar and Zharav Tantish. This time, they’re not only in the lead role, but they’re also with a group of new recruits. All throughout the game, you’ll hear the voice of Dr. Edward Levinson.

In order to move forward, you’ll need to complete tasks given to you by your new team members. Some are simple, requiring assembling resources or performing a task based on a book’s instructions. Others are more challenging, requiring you to find and utilize new technology. As you complete each level, you earn credits that can be spent on new tools and equipment.

You have several types of tools available to you. Each can be used in different situations, so knowing which is best for what task is important. For example, there are boomerangs and grappling guns that are useful in combating larger creatures like bikers and bears. A grappling gun is effective against tougher, stationary targets, such as zombies. As you progress through the game, you’ll find that the options expand.

Unlike many adventure games, you don’t get to build your character. When you die in Fractured Lands, you start off with a corpse, and your clothing is automatically stripped off. You can only return to life if you find a way to revive yourself. New skills are unlocked as you improve your health, stamina, and agility. The entire system feels very natural, and it’s refreshing to have this kind of leveling system without relying on arbitrary, boring grinding.

Fractured Lands isn’t just a platformer. Don’t think it’s just a bunch of slow-moving action with a little puzzle element. No, in fact, the whole game is built around puzzles, with each level requiring a new puzzle strategy. There are several hidden items in each level, giving clues as to where to go and how to beat a certain enemy. Hidden chests also hide items, and winning these chests opens up further puzzles.

One of the best parts of the game is its sound design. Sound effects are crisp and believable, creating the right ambiance for an adventure game. The enemies’ footsteps, and even individual conversations, are quite convincing. It helps make Fractured Lands feel more like an actual game: there’s no fake interaction, and you have to solve puzzles to progress the story. Overall, it’s a game you’ll enjoy playing for many hours.
